Make it easier or harder

Easier: Remove the pressing constraint — practice the movement patterns and passing sequences without pressure before adding defenders. Try: 3v3 Three Zone.

Harder: Add a second pressing pair in the midfield zone — the building team must navigate two lines of pressure before reaching the attack. Next: 5v5 Low Block.

Why this drill matters

Building out from the back — constructing attacks from the goalkeeper through the defensive line and into midfield under pressure — is a fundamental aspect of possession-based football. It requires composure under pressure, precise short passing, intelligent movement to create angles, and the tactical discipline to play through pressure rather than avoiding it with a long ball. This drill conditions players to treat build-up as an attack, not a panic measure.

What you'll need

  • 1 ball (multiple balls for quick restarts)
  • Cones for a 35×25 yard area
  • Goalkeeper (optional but recommended)
  • Full-size or marked goal at one end
  • 8 players: 4 building team + 4 pressing team
  • Bibs

Coaching points

  • Starting shape for the building team: goalkeeper + two wide defenders + one midfielder in a square formation — creating four distinct passing options from the start.
  • Movement: every player without the ball must be checking away and offering — if the pass isn't immediately available, move again. Static players are easy to press.
  • Goalkeeper's role: in modern football, the GK is the first passer. They must receive under pressure and play to the least-pressured defender, not the most pressured.
  • Pressing team's goal: trigger a mistake or force a long ball within 6 seconds. Press in pairs — one on the ball, one on the most likely outlet.
  • Progression: once past the pressing line, the building team attacks freely. This rewards successful build-out and gives attackers a motivation beyond possession.

Common mistakes

  • Building team plays long too quickly — the first long ball under slight pressure defeats the entire purpose of the drill.
  • Defenders stand still when the ball is played to the goalkeeper — they must move to create new angles, not wait for the ball.
  • Pressing team loses shape — all four sprint to the ball, leaving a massive gap for the building team to play through.
  • No verbal communication during build-up — 'keeper,' 'man on,' 'turn,' 'drop' are essential for composure under pressure.
  • Players turn their backs to their own goal when receiving — always receive side-on so you can see both the pressure and the outlet.

When to use this drill

Excellent for team shape sessions and for teams transitioning to a possession-based system. Use early in the season to establish build-out habits, then reinforce mid-season after match footage reveals the team is playing long unnecessarily under manageable pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What if the pressing team always wins the ball high up?

The pressing team is too good and the area is too small. Widen the area to give the building team more room, or reduce the pressing team to 3 players.

Should the goalkeeper play short every time?

Not necessarily — coaches should define build-out triggers. If the goalkeeper is pressed immediately, a switched long ball to a free wide defender is the right call.

How many lines of pressure should we practice?

Start with 1 line (4 pressers), then progress to 2 lines (4v4 pressing + 2v2 midfield block) for a more complex build-out challenge.

What age is this appropriate for?

U13+ for basic build-out patterns. Younger players (U10–U12) benefit from simpler versions without the pressing constraint.
