Make it easier or harder

Easier: Shorten the playing area to 35×25 yards and allow 3 touches — reduces the physical and technical demands while maintaining the all-phase tactical concept. Try: 4v4 Set & Flow.

Harder: Add a 'position rule': all 5 outfield players must be in their designated zones (2 in the back, 2 in the middle, 1 in attack) or the team loses a point — forces disciplined shape maintenance. Next: 5v5 Switch & Squeeze.

Why this drill matters

Box-to-box play — maintaining team shape and composure through all phases of play, from your own box to the opponent's — requires both physical and tactical consistency over a longer duration than most small-sided drills. This format forces teams to manage the entire pitch in miniature: defend deep, build, transition, attack, and repeat without reset. It develops game intelligence, physical endurance, and the ability to sustain tactical discipline when fatigued.

What you'll need

  • Multiple balls for quick restarts
  • Full-width cones across a 50×35 yard area (or two penalty areas of a full pitch)
  • Two full-size goals with goalkeepers
  • 10 players: two teams of 5
  • Bibs
  • Coach scoring and managing game flow

Coaching points

  • Phase integration: after winning the ball, players must immediately recognize which phase they're in (transition, attack, set piece) and execute the correct response — no hesitation.
  • Defensive positioning: when not in possession, the team's shape relative to the ball must be maintained across the full length — no 'bunching' behind the ball or leaving gaps in front.
  • Physical endurance: box-to-box sessions last 5+ minutes per rep, demanding that shape maintenance continues even as legs tire in minutes 4–5 of each rep.
  • Communication load: with the longer field, verbal organization is more challenging. Players must develop vocal habits to maintain awareness of teammates 20–30 yards away.
  • Game intelligence: the team must manage 'when to press' vs. 'when to hold' based on position and score — tactical decision-making at match pace.

Common mistakes

  • Teams drop into one phase and stay — once they're defending deep, they struggle to transition to attacking shape quickly when possession is won.
  • Physical fatigue reduces tactical discipline — coaches must emphasize shape maintenance precisely when players are most tired.
  • One team presses the entire pitch for the full duration — physically unsustainable and creates fatigue-related mistakes in the final minute of each rep.
  • Long ball mentality dominates under pressure — when teams tire, they resort to long balls that bypass tactical principles. Challenge players to maintain short build-up even when tired.
  • No goal-scoring urgency — box-to-box drills can become possession exercises. Maintain a clear scoring format to preserve competitive intensity.

When to use this drill

Best used in full-session or as the primary activity in a 75-minute session when tactical integration and conditioning are both targets. Use mid-to-late season when team shape is established and the goal is sustaining it under fatigue. Also excellent pre-tournament preparation.

Frequently asked questions

How long should each rep last?

5–7 minutes per rep with a 90-second rest. Repeat 3–4 times. This gives each team 15–25 minutes of match-relevant intensity.

Should we use goalkeepers?

Yes — goalkeepers complete the realistic build-out and counter-attack scenarios. Without them, the drill loses the starting and finishing points of each phase.

Can we play with 6v6 instead?

Yes — 6v6 on the same area increases congestion and decision speed, and closer resembles a full 11v11 tactical structure in miniature.

How do we keep score fairly?

Standard goals count 1. Goals scored within 5 seconds of a turnover count 2 (rewards quick transitions). Goals scored after a complete build-out from own box count 3 (rewards tactical build-up).
